Why I keep making bases (and why I love using them)

Not everyone needs a full tutorial—sometimes you just need a solid starting point so you can focus on the fun part: character design, outfits, expressions, and vibes.

What counts as an “art base” anyway?

An art base is basically a simplified body (or hands, or face, or full pose) that you can draw over. Think of it like a mannequin, but flatter and way more friendly. How I use a base without it looking “base-y”

Step 1: Drop the base and set it to low opacity. I keep it light so I’m not tempted to trace every line exactly.

Warm-up method: I pick one hand base and redraw it 5 times, but each time I change one thing (finger length, angle, tension, or gesture).

Character method: I assign a mood to the hand. Like “shy,” “mean girls energy,” “nervous,” “confident,” “about to grab a snack.” The same base can look totally different depending on how you draw the fingers and wrist tension.

Prop method: I add an object: phone, pen, sleeve, bag strap, hoodie pocket. Suddenly the hand makes sense, and it’s easier to draw.

I saw the “MEAN GIRLS” vibe in base content and I get it so much. Some poses are not just anatomy—they’re attitude. Like the hip pop, the crossed arms, the “I’m judging you but silently” stance. Those are the best bases for character work because they instantly tell a story.

If you want that confident, dramatic, slightly chaotic energy in your drawings, try building from bases that have:

Strong asymmetry: one shoulder higher, one knee bent, one hip pushed out.

Clear line of action: a curve through the spine that feels intentional.

Hands doing something: pointing, holding a strap, touching hair, resting on waist.

Even if you’re drawing something soft and cute, starting from a bold base can make your final piece feel more alive.

My “Void Location” folder problem (aka: how I organize bases)

I’m not gonna lie, my files used to be a mess. I had random downloads named stuff like “Void,” “oid Locatt,” “Location Void,” and I’d be like… what even is this 😭 So now I organize bases in a way that actually helps when I’m mid-drawing and impatient.

This is the folder system that saved me:

Base drawing ideas when you don’t know what to draw

Sometimes the hardest part isn’t the pose—it’s deciding what the character is doing. If you’re stuck, here are some base-friendly prompts I use when my brain is loading like a slow screen 🙃

1) “Outfit swap” challenge: Use one base and design three outfits on it: casual, fancy, and “I’m in a horror movie and I need to survive.”

2) “Expression set” sheet: Same base, same hair, same outfit—only change the face: happy, annoyed, embarrassed, shocked, tired.

3) “OC intro card”: Use a base to draw your OC standing, then add little text notes around them (likes, dislikes, favorite food, favorite color). It’s such a fun way to build personality.

4) “Fanart twist”: Take a base and imagine a character in a totally random situation (like “against a printer” energy). The contrast makes it funny and memorable.

5) “Hands only story”: Draw two hands interacting: passing a note, tying a ribbon, holding a sleeve, grabbing a snack. No faces needed, but it still tells a story.

How to credit bases without making it stressful

A lot of base posts say something like “you may use these, no need to credit, credit if you want, it’s up to you.” I love that energy because it keeps art accessible. At the same time, it’s always nice to respect creators when possible.

My personal rule is simple:

If the base creator is known and easy to tag, I credit. If it’s a base I made myself or a free-use base that explicitly says no credit needed, I don’t stress. The goal is to keep things kind and clear, not scary.

Also, if you’re sharing your own bases: writing a short permission note on the image (like “free to use”) helps everyone feel safe using it.

My mini checklist for making your drawing look original on a base

If you’re worried your piece will look too close to the template, try this checklist before you call it finished:

Change the proportions slightly: longer legs, shorter torso, bigger hands, smaller shoulders—whatever matches your style.

Add unique clothing folds: folds are like fingerprints. They make it feel hand-drawn and personal.

Redesign the hair silhouette: hair shape changes the whole character instantly.

Push the gesture: exaggerate the curve of the spine or the tilt of the head for more emotion.

Lighting and color do a lot: even a simple base becomes “yours” with your shading style.
